30 years of Countrywide

September 1995: The Future Starts Now! Conference, Maroochydore.

Family, friendship and food service partnerships

It’s been an extraordinary three decades supporting food service in Australia, with Australian families at the heart of everything we do. Here’s a brief look at where Countrywide has come from – and where we’re headed – with our “special ingredient” of family-owned distributor businesses.

Sebastian Galipo, founder of Galipo Foods describes himself as a “true believer” in Countrywide from the first inklings of an idea to create a national food-service conglomerate in the early 1990s.

Until then, most Australian food services businesses had been operating independently or in state-based groups, but momentum was gathering for a national cooperative to form to secure better prices from suppliers and optimised service for customers – and, importantly, help independents stand up against growing competition from corporates.

“For a long time, we all thought we could do it alone,” Galipo recalls.

“But these bigger players were getting bigger, faster, and the food service industry was changing – all of a sudden a lot of us could see there was a need. The original visionaries in the 1990s were Tom Bourne and Kevin Rose and Murray Anderson – they convinced me that we needed to get together.”

Founding Members (from left): Doug Hambilton, Neville Stedman and Kevin Rose with Countrywide Australasia’s inaugural Chair, Tino Arquilla.

Countrywide’s mission was to become the most committed, cohesive buying, marketing and distributing foodservice company in Australia in order to advantage the Members of the group to the greatest degree possible.

It was a bold goal and different to anything that had been done in Australia before, but the Countrywide founders had observed a successful US model delivering great dividends and were determined to bring the same opportunities to Australian food service businesses.

11

“Originally it was a group of thought leaders who could see the big picture possibility,” says Countrywide CEO Jeff Dhu.

“Once Countrywide was formed, the suppliers had the opportunity to get national distribution, which is actually better than what many of our corporate competitors can offer.”

Thirty years later, many of the inaugural family food service businesses are still displaying the Countrywide logo proudly – many now operated by third generation family Members.

“Countrywide is a formidable player because of all of the history that the business has been able to develop over the journey,” Dhu says.

“There are always new Members and a changing model but 30 years later, we’re still here, riding the waves. Suppliers now look at us as being a ‘must have’ not a ‘nice to have’.

From little things, big things grow

Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing when it came to uniting some 100-odd independent businesses 30 years ago.

Galipo recalls early Members being reluctant to share their pricing deals and some state groups believed their systems were supreme, but after much negotiation and many a stormy meeting, a framework was eventually agreed upon with an unlimited public company structure in 1996, and a new era of food service in Australia was born.

“Faxes were running wild, with people sending handwritten and typed up messages about ‘Why should I be doing this? Why should I be doing that?’ It got pretty messy,” Galipo recalls.

“There were two or three years of intense negotiations until we had a movement.”

It was the group’s first national conference at Twin Waters Beach Resort in Mooloolaba in 1995, where many say the true magic was born.

A giant hot air balloon with the Countrywide Food Service logo and the words “The future starts now!” was parked on the resort lawn, and Nelson Lay, owner of Asian United Food Service, says he will never forget the hum of possibility emanating from the group.

“As a family business, you didn’t often get the chance to meet 200 like-minded people,” Lay recalls of arriving at Countrywide’s inaugural conference.

“My vision was that there was only one thing this group could do – and that was to grow. We all bonded over having the same hurdle of wanting to grow our businesses.”

An exciting future ahead

From navigating the extraordinary challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic to embracing new technology to rolling with ever-changing consumer eating patterns and introducing our InSeason rewards program, Countrywide and its Members have demonstrated incredible agility – a trait that Dhu predicts will put Countrywide in good stead for the next era of foodservice.

“Systems, technology, data, sophistication and speed to market are all going to be the ticket to the game in the next few years as we see more corporate investment in these spaces,” Dhu says.

“The world is moving fast and the speed of technology changes is driving different consumer expectations, which leads to different business expectations. Our challenge is to upskill our Members and help them with all of that technology and data analysis, while still making sure we’re doing the fundamentals of food security, surety of supply and supply chain efficiency really well.”

11
The Countrywide National Conference remains a calendar highlight for Members and Suppliers to connect, share ideas and learn from one another.

And as major supermarkets try to snap up more market share, Lay says there’s one thing that will always make Countrywide Members stand out: flexibility.

“We are not just here to sell food – service is part of the game,” he says.

Galipo says Countrywide is so powerful it is now critical for Australia’s national interest.

“As a group we support our primary industries, manufacturers and suppliers, and as independents our local communities like our local football clubs and nursing homes with Christmas lunches,” he says.

11
The Countrywide Gala Awards annually acknowledges the exceptional contribution both Members and Suppliers have made in their respective markets.

Ultimately, the strength of human connection will always remain Countrywide’s powerful point of difference.

“Our Members are relationship-driven and willing to go that extra mile. They know the product their customer needs and how to solve problems for the end user,” Dhu says.

“All of our Members are fundamentally family businesses, which instils an ownership behaviour, which I think makes a massive difference [to their customers]. We have the strength of independence and don’t take a cookie cutter approach. Countrywide will continue to adapt and evolve just like we have for the past 30 years, and will continue to prosper going forward.”

Always going the extra mile

Few industries were affected as intensely by the COVID-19 pandemic than food service, but there was one surprising silver lining to come out of that tumultuous time.

“COVID no doubt put independents on the map more than they’d ever been,” Dhu says.

“Politicians who had thought food just got to restaurants through Woolworths and Coles, developed a far better understanding about the distribution channels and supply channels and the family businesses behind that.”

Focus on exceptional service

If there’s one certainty in foodservice, Countrywide Chair Grant Harrod says it’s to expect uncertainty – and Countrywide Members and Suppliers know only too well that the best way to ride out the rollercoaster is by always going above and beyond for customers.

“As we look to the future, we will need to continue navigating uncertainty and change” he says.

“But whether it’s navigating the challenges of a pandemic, dealing with new entrants and continued industry consolidation or the changes diets and expectation of consumers…it is the group’s enduring focus on exceptional customer service and continuing to go the extra mile, which stands our network out from all others in the foodservice industry.”

Countrywide is on the cusp of more great things, celebrating year-on-year Member growth and a strong leadership team ready to steer Countrywide into the next chapter. Grant is looking forward to fostering connections and success through regular regional meetings, thought-leadership study tours, new e-Commerce platforms and the continued growth of the Countrywide Platinum Partner program.

“We’re well-positioned to keep the Countrywide network as the premier channel in food service – we’re looking at an exciting future with focus on continued growth and network expansion” he says.

“The last 30 years have been an amazing rewarding journey for all our Members, and we look forward to helping make the next 30 years even more successful.”

Our Valued Suppliers - Partnering for Success

Countrywide and our Members couldn’t achieve what they do without the extraordinary support of Supplier Partners. With more than 140 leading Suppliers in the Countrywide fold – covering everything from frozen items to dairy to packaging, disposables and cleaning products – Countrywide Members can meet virtually every need of the foodservice industry.

“Our Supplier partnerships are at the heart of the Countrywide business, and we deeply value the close relationship we have with all our Platinum, Advantage and Recognised Suppliers,” says Steve Perry, Executive General Manager – Partnership Engagement.

Understanding the immense value these partnerships bring, Countrywide is always seeking opportunities to connect our Supplier Partners with Members, facilitating new engagements and business growth. “Whether through networking at our National Conferences, Awards of Excellence evenings that recognise their achievements, or our annual Food Service Fair showcasing the latest trends and products, our mission is to regularly bring Members and Suppliers together to drive mutual success” says Perry.
